We recently heard from three men on an adventure... Kelvin Hurlock, Chris Barton and Jamie Barton, three of Harbour Challenge OEC LTD instructional staff, have set themselves the goal of completing the "Go Canoeing Three Lakes Challenge". This involves paddling three lakes in three different countries in as close to 24 hours as possible including the travel time between each lake. The lakes are Loch Awe in Scotland (distance 25 miles), Lake Windermere in England (distance 11 miles) and Bala Lake in Wales (distance of 7 miles). They are raising money for a Cannulation Chair for Poole Hospital's cancer treatment centre. The Cannulation Chair, also known as a blood sampling chair, is designed to provide comfort and assurance for patients undergoing Radiotherapy treatment. This also helps improve safety and confidence for staff when they are administering treatments through a cannula. The chair will help relax patients at what can be an uncomfortable and emotionally traumatic time. Poole Hospital Radiotherapy unit saw nearly 36,000 attendances last year and the team is working to improve patient experience. The Blood Sampling Chair is an example of how fundraising can help local people through a difficult journey. This is a cause the team is keen to help as they each have friends and relatives who have been affected by Cancer. When asked about training for the event the boys say "We are completing a mixture of 10 mile paddles and additional shorter distances to build stamina and speed. We will increase the distances to paddle and in varying weather and sea conditions as part of our ongoing training programme to prepare us for whatever the weather during the challenge". South Coast Canoes is generously loaning the team three top of the range sea kayaks and paddles which will greatly improve their chances of completing this challenge in their target time of 24 hours. The team is very grateful for their support. Donations can be made via https://www.justgiving.com/harbourchallenge/?utm_source=facebook&utm_medium=shares-from-eua&utm_content=harbourchallenge&utm_campaign=eua-share-facebook We will keep you updated on the progress of the team but please join us in wishing them all the very best in their training, fundraising and challenges that lie ahead. Good luck!
